I received yesterday evening Clemence Gancel, co-founder along with Pauline Dutheil Shop Gals Rock. Located 17 rue Henry Monnier at Pigalle, the new lair of female culture has opened its doors last December: music occupies a prominent place, with a selection of CDs and vinyl records gathering riot grrrls, folkeuses, electronics and songwriter of all kinds. But there are also at Gals Rock of clothes, some books, magazines or articles quite useless (and indispensable). On Sunday, the chicks get up at 7 o'clock in the morning, take their little hands and prepare muffins they offer tea time. In the back room there is a sofa where you can enjoy a coffee while listening to music. Beyond my immoderate interest for all women's initiatives, it became logique de saluer cette démarche généreuse et passionnée. Longue vie à Gals Rock.

Last night I received Wagner, the young French musician who give most want to invade Poland (thank you for this good old Woody valve which I never get tired). Wagner I discovered last Tuesday, during a concert at La Fleche D'or, and I immediately thought, dear listeners, it was my responsibility to make presentations as soon as possible. Yan Wagner was 26, he began his project for a year of study spent in New York and now back in France with a handful of songs gavaged good ideas, stitched knowingly or not in New Order, Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Janco Magnetic Fields or taking of Ecstasy (With Me) . He released an EP in the spring on the Austrian label Estrela, and something tells me that his country of origin should also succumb very quickly to the many charms of this inveterate clubber (he also wrote a thesis on night-clubbing) that could perfectly embody the new wave of French touch.

Magic, the famous Revue Pop Moderne in which I officiated four years, celebrates its 20th anniversary. It was natural for me to ask the editorial staff to celebrate the event, and that's what we started doing this Thursday. Accompanied by Christophe Basterra, editor history taught me everything about New Order and the long coffees, we revisited the first ten years of this saga modern pop songs in ten selected. It can be distinguished several sub-genres:

COLD WAVE: close enough punk musically but more désesepérée, vocals often "monotonous" ( Joy Division, Marquis de Sade, magazine, first simple minds, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, cure, Public Image Limited )

ELECTRO POP: with a leader of the German KRATWERK, thousands of groups has limited technical but impeccable sense of melody starts in the all-electronic pop (or almost). We think of MDGs, Depeche Mode, John Foxx, Human League, Gary Numan etc. ..

Today, we speak of MINIMUM, with emphasis on analog synth sounds warmer than digital and minimalist arrangements.

postpunk: More groovy tribal and that the new wave with his bass lines very prominent (G ang of oven, Liquid Liquid, Maximum Joy , past Clash, Tom Tom Club, XTC, Talking Heads, Feelies, Woodentops ). A genre that remain globally less vendor in Europe that groups purely "new wave" that will be very influential throughout the rock scene 2000 ( Franz Ferdinand, Radio 4, Liars, Bloc Party , etc. ..)

INDUSTRIAL: movement born in Germany following the experiments 70 of FAUST, CAN, new groups take over, using sounds, sound effects and sampling techniques while stammering ( Einsturzende Neubauten, Cabaret Voltaire )

NEW ROMANTIC: not a genre, strictly speaking, but rather a recovery movement in New wave of groups to the aesthetics and impeccable hair cuts (for the time!). Some groups have distinguished themselves in gender as ABC Duran Duran Flock of Seagul or Lotus Eaters.

EBM;, last born in the chronology of the movement, highlights the work on drum machines foreshadowing techno. ( Front 242, Neon Judgement, Nizza Ebb )

It seems that today we are rediscovering the underground music of the 80s for all the influence that they have had on existing groups but also for its freshness and spontaneity that is sorely lacking in a lot of current prods.

Fabrice of FRUSTRATION (Born Bad Records). Influenced by many groups, new wave, music can evoke the frustration of Liars, Pere Ubu, as far as Death in june for his side "Martial"



HENRIETTA Coulouvrat , a bit tripped. Shifted so that it will eventually be really trendy. Very inspired by Chinese music, she has made several singles electro pop as well as an entire album with Boris Bergman (excellent lyricist "gaby" in Bashung ) and Roland Bocquet (ex-catharsis ) In the 80s.

Marc Roger VANDEVOORDE of Polyphonic size. Belgian Group relatively meteoric career but a major influence. (He can count among its fan the 2many deejays-soulwax, Dominique A or Stereo Total). He had so much in my head today, he became a computer engineer.


FRANCK DARCEL of Marquis de Sade . (Two remarkable albums "Dantzig Twist" and "Rue de Siam" in 79 and 80) The music takes a while since he converted in recce politics! Prolific producer in Portugal in the 90's, he started a new project Republik (montecarlo records).


ORTAS Rachel, a lovely little lady who after founding the Tokow boys in the late 70's evolve with his companion while Eric Tabuchi towards a more pop and will a box under their new name Luna Parker ( "states of souls, Eric" ). Today she is an illustrator and teacher of fine art in London. Eric is now a photographer. (They are also very talented and respectively I encouraged to visit their exhibitions!)


Theo Hakola American who laid down in France in the late 70s. After training RED ORCHESTRA and PASSION FODDER , he turned to production (Black desire), written books and produced albums more personal and folk between Bob Dylan and Tom Waits

the musical programing was done in collaboration with David tappers of the night .
